FEATURE HEALTH ARTICLE:  HALITOSIS (MUKH DURGANDHTA OR BAD BREATH)

When the digestive fire is low the excess kapha(phlegm) gets accumulated over the back side of the tongue leading to the causation of bad breath, sometime it’s long standing vidagdha pitta (the disturbed acid).

Recurrent infections of the tonsils lead to scarring and deep pits on the surface of the tonsils, some of which can be very deep forming extensive crypts.
These then become colonised by bacteria and trapped food and dead cells shed from the surface of tongue, gums and cheeks, which then slowly decompose and produce a noticeable odour.

Though the causes of breath odor are not entirely understood, most unpleasant odors are known to arise from proteins trapped in the mouth which are processed by oral bacteria. There are over 600 types of bacteria found in the average mouth. Several dozens of these can produce high levels of foul odors when incubated in the laboratory.

The most common location for mouth-related halitosis is the tongue.

Other parts of the mouth may also contribute to the overall odor, but are not as common as the back of the tongue. These locations are, in descending prevalence order: inter-dental and sub-gingival niches, faulty dental work, food-impaction areas in-between the teeth, abscesses and unclean dentures.

Nasal odor may be due to sinus infections or foreign bodies.

There are a few systemic (non oral) medical conditions which may cause foul breath odor.Such conditions are:

1.   Fetor hepaticus: an example of a rare type of bad breath caused by chronic liver failure.

2.   Lower respiratory tract infections (Bronchial and lung infections).

3.   Renal infections and renal failure.

4.   Carcinoma.

5.   Trimethylaminuria ("fish odor syndrome").

6.   Diabetes mellitus.

7.   Metabolic dysfunction.

8.   Chronic constipation

9.   Alcoholism

10.Hormonal disorders

Treatment:

The buildup of plaque on the tongue is often the cause of halitosis Ayurveda advises a Jiwha nirlekhan (Tongue scraping) – for this reverse U shape metallic scrap is used which is generally made up of  silver, copper, gold or steel. Scraping the tongue removes bacteria and toxic metabolic substances of the gut which are produced over night during the process of digestion, and deposited on the tongue. You can see it during scraping. This white, yellowish, black, bluish or different colour coating is a waste product which should be cleaned away every day, otherwise it will be reingested with eating breakfast..  Build up of bacteria on the tongue causes bad breath (Halitosis), and according to Ayurveda, various types of digestive and respiratory problems can result from continued reabsorption of these waste products.

Eating a healthy breakfast with rough foods helps clean the very back of the tongue.

Maintaining proper oral hygiene, including brushing, daily flossing, and periodic visits to dentists and hygienists.Dentures should be properly cleaned and soaked overnight in antibacterial solution.

Maintain water levels in the body by drinking several glasses of water a day

Having -Fenugreek seed tea,Chewing Amla,Unripe Guava,Cardamom,Clove,Fennel seeds,Thyme,Avocado,Paan (Betel leaves),Khadir (Kathha).

Doing Kavala and Gandusha-Gargling with the herbal decoction of Tulsi,Thyme,Neem and Mint or gargles with Alum (Fitkadi and rock salt).

And Internally take Chitrakadi Vati 2 morning 2 evening after meals for 3 months.
