HEALTH ARTICLE: Temporomandibular
joint (TMJ) Dysfunction (HANU SANDHIVATA) Arthritis
can develop in any joint, including the jaw joint, but this is rare. Accumulation
of disturbed vata in the temporo mandibular joint may lead to pain,
difficulty in opening the jaw, sound while opening the jaw and uncomfort
in chewing or bitting. It
is a pain/dysfunction syndrome caused by structural or functional
abnormality of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), and/or its surrounding
muscles and ligaments. Psychological factors are thought to significantly
affect the degree of dysfunction and pain experienced by some sufferers.
It is thought that the TMJ joint becomes damaged or misaligned leading to
compression and/or tears of the intra-articular meniscus. Fatigue of the
muscles of mastication may occur, leading to recruitment and chronic
tension of other skull, back and neck muscles. This can lead to widespread
head, neck and upper trunk pain. Risk
factors
Chronic anxiety/muscular tension, clenching of jaw and bruxism, arthritis
or damage of TMJ joint, depression, tendency to somatisation. Presentation
Unilateral face pain in the region of the TMJ. Usually, pain is dull and
increases throughout the day or after chewing. Jaw clicking, locking and
crepitus plus limitation of oral opening are other common features.
Frequently it is possible to feel the spasm of the masseter muscle
externally and internal pterygoid muscle within mouth. May be associated
with hearing impairment and tinnitus. Symptoms
can vary greatly but, people with this usually get: ·
Recurrent
clicking in the temporomandibular joint (the joint at which the jaw bone
swings down to open the mouth). This clicking may occur at any point in
the movement of the jaw, and there may also be crackling, known as
crepitus, especially when you try to move the jaw bone from side to side. ·
A
painful joint with tenderness in the surrounding muscles. ·
A
stiff jaw joint that can't move far and sometimes locks. The
cause of temporomandibular joint pain-dysfunction syndrome isn't known,
although there are some strong theories. These include: ·
Excessive
muscular activity around the jaw, for example, from constant grinding or
clenching of teeth. ·
Stress. Treatment: The
traditional Ayurvedic preparations like Mahayograj gugglu,Yograj gugglu,
Boswellia,Vatavidhwansan ras, Ashwagandha are advised to be taken for 1-3
months. Mukhabhayanga with Laghu vishgarbha tail or Prasarni taila followed by baluka sveda or washp sveda with Nirgundi and dhatura leaves is helpful in this. Kawala
Gargling
of medicated oils or certain liquids/Kwath is Kawala. It strengthens the
nerves & joints by pacifying aggravated vata. It is advised to be done
with Narayan oil in the morning after brushing. Nasyam:
The nose is the doorway to the brain and it is also the doorway to
consciousness. The nasal administration of medicated oil is called nasya.
An excess of bodily humors accumulated in the sinus, throat, nose, ears or
head areas is eliminated by means of the nearest possible opening, the
nose. Mahamasdha oil or Dhanwantar oil 2 drops in each nostril is advised
for regular use. Karnapooran:
To calm the vata
in the ears, ten drops of warm oil is applied daily to each ear. The oil
is allowed to remain in the first ear for five or ten minutes, then that
ear is cleaned, and the same procedure is followed with the other ear,
with the patient lying on the other side. It stimulate
the sense organs ,pacifies vata and calm the mind.Bilwadi
tail,Apamargkshar tail,Dashmool tail can be used for Karnpooran. All cold drinks and food should be avoided. You
may consult our Ayurveda experts through on
line consultation or
personally. HERB OF THE MONTH: NIRGUNDIThe
